Hey there everyone!

First of all, I want to give a big WELCOME to all of our new members! Thank you for choosing Gwinnett Locally Grown and for supporting our local farmers. Hope everyone is having a fantastic week and everyone is enjoying all the delicious food you picked up this week.

I have a few announcements to make, some new things up on the market this week. Pilar has finished brewing a few batches of Kombucha this past couple of weeks! We have two flavors available, mint and hibiscus and you can purchase that by the bottle or by the gallon. We also have milk kefir grains and kobucha starter kits, and all of that is available under the Ferments category in the market. I love Kombucha, for those of you who haven't heard of it; kombucha is a fermented tea beverage and a great source of probiotics (good intestinal bacteria). The health benefits of fermented foods are just endless, think of your gut and your gut bacteria as your second brain. Probiotics are a great way to keep and maintain a healthy gut! If you are curious let me know, I'll have samples this week.

A new addition to the market, but not up on the site yet is BLUEBERRIES!! which I absolutely love. We'll have a limited quantity available at the market for $3.40/pint so pick one up before they are all gone!

Peppers, cucumbers, and beans are all in season so make sure you take advantage and stock up! Check out the great and growing variety of veggies available. And don't forget to pick up your essentials for the week:

  • Raw Cow's and Goat's Milk
  • Pastured Chicken and Duck Eggs
  • Pastured Chicken and Pork
  • Grass Fed Beef
  • Local Honey (great to treat allergies!)
  • Locally Roasted Coffee
  • Savory Jams and Grain Mixes

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments, as well as any feedback on how we can better serve you. I am available Monday-Thursday 11am-4pm. grow@ranchoalegrefarm.com or 770-339-3065 ext 5

Hope everyone is having a great week so far. I've been very busy working in the garden here at the farm! Planting, transplanting, pruning, and weeding… enjoying watching the kids at summer camp have a blast learning about how food is grown. By the way, if you have little ones and are looking for something to keep them outside and off the electronics; we're running a couple more 3-day summer camps here at the farm . Go check it out!

I wanted to share with you all my experience with the Wild Lambs Quarter I got from Bill this week. I read a little about them, they are packed with chlorophyll and iron as well as vitamin A. Taste a bit like spinach and it can be used in any recipe that calls for, chard and kale. So I sauteed mine this morning with a little garlic and coconut oil, fried a couple of eggs I got from Marty (Rocky Acres) and that was me breaking the fast! This is pretty much my favorite way to get my greens in the morning, or a smoothie.

So go browse the market, get inspired and creative this week. Try something new!

Hope everyone had a fantastic Memorial Day weekend, and a great week so far. I have been very busy around the farm, trying to finalize this summer’s garden. I have noticed some of you have gotten seedlings from The Veggie Patch, I love gardening and would love to hear about all the exciting things going on your backyards/gardens. So please feel free to share, I’m always looking to learn and exchange information!

This week has been all about chickens for me, we have some new baby chickens at the farm and it got me thinking about pastured Vs conventionally raised poultry. The USDA has so many labels such as “free range”, “free roaming”, organic… it can get pretty confusing. Bill, our “chicken guy” does a combination of pasture and supplements with a non-GMO feed. His “girls” (as he refers to them) live in portable tractors out in the field and are moved to fresh pastures every day. The combination of pasture and feed leads to a diverse fat profile, higher Omega-3 content and reduced saturated fat/overall fat; not to mention they taste better. Chicken is one of the most versatile ingredients you can have in your freezer, not to mention a good and healthy source of protein. Head over to the market and check out Bill’s inventory!

THE MARKET IS OPEN!

Good morning and hello everyone!

Hope you are having a great week so far, I am sure everyone is looking forward to the long weekend… I know I am! A much needed break and extra family time is just what the doctor ordered.

The Market is now OPEN until Monday at noon!! Click here to order now!

This week my nutrition/wellness research focused on grass fed beef  Vs "feedlots" beef. Let me just disclose something while I am on this topic, I am a vegetarian and have been for the past 9 years. I am also a nutritionist, graduated with a degree in Nutritional Sciences. As a nutritionist, I do not advocate for any particular diet but I do encourage everyone to get their fruits and vegetables DAILY and at least a total of 7 servings. Although I am not a meat eater, I can get on board with the health benefits of grass fed beef.  Beef from grass fed animals has a higher content of Omega-3 fatty acid, lower levels of cholesterol, and high levels of fat soluble vitamins A and E. Not only is the nutritional profile of grass fed beef better when compared to conventional, but the animals are raised in a more humane way that's also better for the environment.

With that said, please head over to the market and show Fred (our "beef guy") some love! I'll make sure to thank him for keeping a steady supply for us, and for doing things the way it should be done.

As always, please check out the great selection The Veggie Patch offers. There's always room for veggies at the table!

Hello Everyone!!

Thank you all once again for coming out this week and supporting Gwinnett Locally Grown and our local vendors. I finally had the opportunity to meet some of you and talk a little about food (of course!), and all the good things you guys are creating with the products you pick up at the store. I am a big time foodie, I can spend hours talking about food and recipes and all that good stuff. So please feel free to bring in your recipes, ask questions and/or mingle! Don't be shy!

I was doing some research this week on duck eggs. Most importantly I was interested in finding out more about their nutritional content. As it turns out, duck eggs are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (71.4mg/egg), Iron, and B-vitamins especially pantothenic acid (B5). Our bodies need B5 to break down protein, fats, and carbohydrates from the foods we eat. Duck eggs are very good for baking, since they contain more albumin and this in turn makes the final product lighter and fluffier. Give it a try! and report back with results please!
