SUNDAY MARKET REMINDER

This email is a gentle reminder that ordering through Gwinnett Locally Grown will close tomorrow (Monday) 9.a.m.

The Market is open Thursday Noon – Monday 9:00 a.m. After that, ordering is disabled until Thursday noon-ish. Pick up your order Tuesday 4:30-6:30 p.m. only at Rancho Alegre Farm at 2225 Givens Road, Dacula, GA 30019. New to The Market? Learn about how it works here.

MARKET NEWS
Farmers have listed some more new veggies (new, scruptious-sounding lettuces, cukes, tomatoes and potatoes), and fruit (cantelope), so be sure to check things out. I also know Russell is testing flavored butters, and we are almost there!

This week I plan to be on the hunt for recipes to add to our recipe section. If you have a favorite which contains items available through market, please share. You can upload it yourself, or I would be very happy to do it! Please let us know where you originally found the recipe too (I personally read recipes handed down through families like a good novel and love to see those stories, and have found some good ones all over the internet, but those latter ones need to have the source listed – copyright rules, ya know!)

My best to all -

Shop often and eat well!

MARKET NEWS
We have three different varieties of cucumbers available this week, and they’re all different. Below are quick descriptions:

Lemon Burpless from Bo & Lisa’s
The flavor is mild and sweet, and the skin isn’t quite as bitter as other varieties. The name comes from their appearance, rather than taste!

Pickling Cucumbers from Bo & Lisa’s
These are excellent for making sweet pickles or even refrigerator pickles. I will try to find a recipe for these when I come back from vacation!

General Lee Slicing Cucumbers from Back River Farm
Excellent slicers for cucumber salad or a salad with cucumber highlights.

If you pay us by check: Please make checks payable to Rancho Alegre Farm rather than Gwinnett Locally Grown. Thanks so much!!!!

Mother Earth Meats is transitioning to a 6-week delivery cycle. The means the next delivery will be August 2, and cut-off for ordering bulk packages is July 19. It is likely he will remain on the 6-week cycle, so please plan accordingly. Here is the direct link to the most popular package but don’t be afraid to browse the website!

Here’s how ordering works:
• 1. Place your order for Mother Earth Meats products on their website. Remember, they offer more than chicken, so it does not have to only be chicken.
• 2. At checkout, fill out the Shipping Address with OUR address as follows: Rancho Alegre Farm, 2225 Givens Road, Dacula, GA 30019. Please see the snapshot on the right for a graphic explanation. IMPORTANT: Click on Buyer’s Club so you are not charged shipping!
• 3. Pay online when you order.
• 4. Forward us your order confirmation via email with subject line MEM ORDER to grow@ranchoalegrefarm.com. This is extremely important!
• 5. Pick up your order Saturday, August 2. Exact time will be announced as soon as we know the schedule, but we may have to call you that day. If you order, please keep your day open as we do not have storage space and delivery drops are not packaged to survive in the summer heat the way they were when Tracy was shipping.

I am on a “working” vacation, so I will see you in a couple weeks, but Dave will be handling market this week.

FARM NEWS
I am rerunning the following news item about buying a t-shirt to sponsor a child for our Summer Farm Camp because the deadline is Sunday, so there’s time to order if you haven’t yet. And I fixed the broken link, so sorry about that! I know the project is going well but I forgot to ask about exact numbers in our staff meeting yesterday. I will definitely be sharing the information with you in the future!

Project Generation Gap has teamed up with Rancho Alegre Farm to send deserving kids to Farm Camp.

Project Generation Gap believes that traditional growing methods are being lost and our food supply is being compromised. Using the garden as the genesis, PGG intends to ‘bridge the gap’ between our elders and our youth, food producers and consumers. Our vision is to create a community of inter-generational gardeners; cultivating relationships as they cultivate the land using sustainable, respectful growing practices. Through educational programming, volunteerism and hands- on workshops, we intend to reinforce the three main pillars of any sustainable community: education, stewardship and respect.

Please help us achieve our goal of giving deserving children an opportunity they might not otherwise have. By purchasing one of our stylish, organic t-shirts, you are becoming a part of our grassroots effort to support the next generation in becoming healthy, well informed, contributing citizens. Every 5 shirts sold means one child goes to camp! 100% of the profits from this campaign go to the kids. Our goal is to sell at least 100 shirts by July 13th. To purchase a shirt, visit here

T-shirt sales for the fundraiser to get kids to our July Farm Camp who might not normally be able to attend are going well – here is the corrected link – sorry about that! Sales end July 13th, so please consider buying a T-shirt if you have not already. Thanks everybody!!!

MARKET NEWS
Late addition – Russell has butter again, we were a little late getting it listed, for those of you ordered first thing. Also – we are starting to get a good quantity of garlic and potatoes listed, as well as Zephyr Squash. I’m not much of a squash fan, mostly because I wasn’t raised on it I guess. Does anybody have a recipe they’d like to share? I’d love to try something interesting (please don’t suggest putting it in a smoothie, lol!)

EXITING NEWS!
Our market is growing! Since I became market manager in October, I’ve been tracking our sales and we are showing a general upward trend in order $$$. This is exciting because as our market sales grow, we can bring in new vendors. I have been assured that Rancho Alegre Farm is kind of far out in the country, which I continue to try to wrap my head around – being from what now seems as a fairly remote part of Ohio (23 miles round trip to grocery, 52 miles round trip for my kids to go to school, very difficult to see a neighbor from the kitchen window). We moved on purpose to an area where we have better and closer access to everything.

My point is that there’s a symbiotic relationship between farmers and customers – we have to have good farmers to attract a lot of customers, and we have to have a lot of customers to attract a wide variety of farmers. This latter makes it difficult to have specialty items listed on our market. Although I don’t have a problem with some competition among farmers when it comes to offering products, I am much more concerned with creating an ever-increasing variety of products.

Be sure to pick up market brochures when you come Tuesday to share with your friends, family, co-workers, and random people on the street :-) The more customers we have, the more variety we will be able to offer! We are definately on our way, and it will take all of us to grow the market!

MARKET NEWS
We have pastured chicken from Mother Earth Meats in stock again.
Be sure to order as early as possible because it is a popular item! Sadly, we cannot stock as much as I would like – we simply do not have the freezer space to store it. They have a really good $99 package you can order directly from them and have shipped to Rancho Alegre for pick-up on the fourth Saturday of the month. I have not confirmed July’s schedule yet, so be sure to call Tracy first if you have a tight schedule. No. 1 on my list of future purchases is a small chest freezer so I can start ordering in bulk!

Mother Earth Meats also has elk, seafood (frog legs anyone?), wild Alaska salmon and other items. I really like elk, its’ taste is much more similar to beef than venison.

If you do try something from MEM besides chicken, let me know what you think, I’d love to talk about it here.

For those of you new to the market, our in-stock Mother Earth Meats is a group buy, and as such, is not listed under Fresh & Local. Go to Group Buys — > Mother Earth Meats, to make your selection. Bulk orders directly through MEM should have our farm listed as the delivery address.

FARM NEWS
I have copied the following info from the farm newsletter I sent out over the past couple days concerning a farm project in development with a non-profit organization. One of Pilar’s biggest passion is teaching about farming and healthy food and our partnership with Project Generation Gap will help more kids be able to attend our farm summer camp. If you do not get our newsletter, please give the following a read:

MARKET NEWS
Lisa has bug repellent listed this week, just in time for those holiday outdoor activities: Fresh & Local — > Natural Pest Control — > Mosquito Repellant. Here is the description: Homemade using juices, extracts, and the Beauty Berry Plant in an Rubbing alcohol base to create the perfect body spray. Give it quick shake before spraying, and you may spray your hands and wipe your neck and face too. Reapply as needed. Mosquitoes may land on you, but will not like the taste of you. Another tip for you: Eat as many greens as possible, Mosquitoes are not vegetarians. lol… You will need an extra one to share with others when they learn you have the secret. Enjoy the outdoors again.

Also, Fred has lots of hamburger listed for your cook-outs next week-end.

Things I always buy through market and never at the store: hamburger, eggs, milk and butter – so very lucky to have healthy, local alternatives!

MARKET NEWS: POUND CAKE IS BACK & VEGGIE, HERBS & FRUIT UPDATES

The Market is open Thursday Noon – Monday 9:00 a.m. After that, ordering is disabled until Thursday noon-ish. Pick up your order Tuesday 4:30-6:30 p.m. only at Rancho Alegre Farm at 2225 Givens Road, Dacula, GA 30019. New to The Market? Learn about how it works here.

MARKET NEWS
If you ordered through market a few weeks ago when we were giving out samples of pound cake, and had some on hand to sell, you will be ultra-pleased to find that we will have them again as a “shelf” item (meaning available as an add-on item during pick-up but not listed on the market website.) Ellen has expanded her offerings in time for the Fourth of July. These freeze exceptionally well, I’ve been told; sadly, I gobble mine down (with a little help from my husband) before any intended party date ever arrives. These are “real” pound cakes with real butter and free-range eggs from her farm. Decadent is hardly an apt word (just my humble opinion, lol!)

Traditional: (Large loaves $12.00)
Classic Vanilla
Lavender Vanilla
Salted Caramel
Lemon and Toasted Coconut

Gluten-Free (Baby Cake size – feeds 2-4 price $8.00)
Classic Vanilla
Salted Caramel

For those of you who are new to our market, we ocassionally have items for sale at pick-up that aren’t listed on the website. The purchase can be added to your order, even if you paid online.

VEGGIE & HERB NEWS
We are able to offer lettuces, radishes and kale further into the season than other markets because Leah Lake Farm is located up in the mountains so they have a slightly cooler growing season. (My apologies in my conversations where I said they are located in South Carolina – they are in North Carolina. Lettuce “bolts” or starts to form seed heads when it gets hot, so I don’t know how much longer lettuce will be available. Visit their website here.

Lisa from Bo & Lisa’s Lil’ Patch is starting to have some herbs, veggies and fruits coming on, but it may be a couple weeks before they have ample supplies of blackberries, beans, tomatoes and beets. Their blueberries are very happy and producing well and haven’t even needed organic pest control this year! This may be the last week they have garlic scapes available…

Back River Farm has rejoined us for the season and has summer squash, two kinds of turnips, arugula and red potatoes. If you are using the turnips for their greens, I suggest picking your order up as close to 4:30 as possible because it is supposed to be 95 degrees Tuesday. I’m thinking I’m not going to be the only thing in the store wilting!!!

Rancho Alegre has lemon balm, parsley and spearmint on the market, and will probably have additional herbs next week.

Duck eggs: Sally from Treffynnon Farm is teaching this summer so she won’t be able to deliver more duck eggs. We only have two cartons of the half-dozen duck eggs left. Lisa from Bo & Lisa’s may have duck eggs later, but the weather may get too hot, so we’re not sure yet. Sally’s eggs are an add-on and not listed on market, so first-come, first serve.

Enjoy your shopping! Be sure to pick up brochures about our market when you come Tuesday to share with your friends, family, co-workers, and random people on the street :-)

FARM NEWS
June Farm Camp was a HUGE success! Campers milked the goats, washed the pony, fed the chickens, pulled weeds and planted seeds in the garden, and much, much more. Some of the older campers even learned cow herding when our cow decided to visit the neighbor one morning!!!

July camp registration is now open. For information, go here. To book your reservation for your 5-14 year olds, go here. Please note that we cannot guarantee cow-chasing as part of the July camp experience :-)

MARKET NEWS
We have two markets left before the Fourth of July…are you having a cook-out? This is one of my very favorite summer activities and we have a lot of great items on market to make a scrumptious locally grown meal! I buy hamburger every week to slowly add to my stockpile so when a holiday rolls around, I have an ample supply.

So here is my holiday challenge to you: how many items from our local farmers can you share with family and friends at your holiday cook-out? (Shameless Plug: please pick up market brochures to share with your friends and family, we would love to have them as customers too!)

Here are some helpful suggestions. I would enjoy hearing additional ideas that you will be using!!!

Wagon Wheel Ranch – Steaks and burgers for the grill: grass-fed, grass-finished
or try
Anderson Farms pork chops on the grill!
Smokin’ Hot Buns – Mandy makes some pretty awesome hamburger buns from scratch. These can be put in the freezer Tuesday night and thawed the morning of the Fourth for optimum freshness.
Johnston Family Farm – what better way to top off the burger than with hand-made Mozzarella cheese?
Rocky Acres – devil those eggs!!!! (Or make Egg Salad for your vegetarian friends.)
Leah Lakes & Bo & Lisa’s Lil Patch – Lettuce and onions, be watching for tomatoes to be listed for burger toppers. Watch for potatoes too, I love putting potatoes and onions in aluminum foil with some olive oil or Johnston Family Farm butter and tossing it on to the grill. Yum! And because Leah Lakes has about a bazillion kinds of lettuce, a large tossed salad will be a yummy addition.
Smokin’ Hot Buns, Bo & Lisa’s Lil Patch and Sylvan Falls Mill: an ample supply of ready-made desserts, or blueberries or blackberries from Lisa to make your own.
And don’t forget to top it all off with iced coffee from JavaGenisis (save some cream from your milk from Russell), make blueberry milkshakes or smoothies from Lisa and Johnston Family Farm or top it all off with kombucha from Rancho Alegre! Also refreshing herbal iced tea (herbs from Lisa – Rancho Alegre will also have mints and lemon balm listed next week) sweetened with honey.

See you Tuesday!

Dear Market Customer -

Market really is open now. When I switched from sending the entire market listings out to just a link for you to click on, it no longer automatically makes everything “live”. It is a manual step I have to do, and now I’ve done it. So sorry about that – thanks for your patience..once again, ya’ll are awesome!
